Residents Urged to Prioritize Wildfire Preparedness Amid Severe Drought

As Garrett County faces extreme drought conditions, the risk of wildfires has reached critical levels, endangering local ecosystems, homes, and communities. In light of these conditions, officials are emphasizing the importance of wildfire preparedness and prevention measures to safeguard the county's residents and natural beauty.

With vegetation drying up and landscapes becoming increasingly parched, the likelihood of wildfires has escalated dramatically. To mitigate this growing threat, residents are urged to take proactive steps, including creating defensible spaces around their properties, clearing flammable debris, and strictly adhering to local burn regulations via the Garrett County Health Department at https://garretthealth.org/burn-permits/.

Community awareness and education on wildfire safety are equally crucial. Residents are encouraged to stay informed about the current fire conditions, participate in wildfire safety training, and share preventative tips with neighbors and friends. By fostering a culture of preparedness, we can collectively reduce the risk of catastrophic fires.

In addition to individual actions, establishing emergency plans and conducting regular fire drills can help ensure that residents are ready to respond swiftly should a wildfire occur. Preparedness is the key to minimizing damage and protecting lives.

“Wildfire prevention has never been more critical,” said David Middleton, Emergency Planner with the Garrett County Office of Emergency Management.  “By working together and taking these necessary precautions, we can protect both our community and the unique beauty of Garrett County’s landscapes.”
