About
The Permits & Inspection Division of the Department of Planning & Land Management provides residential and commercial customers with the information needed to submit permit applications and plans; distributes permit applications and plans to agencies responsible for review; issues permits, and performs required inspections for approved applications. Other services provided by this office include:
- Providing permit application and processing status,
- Storing, maintaining, and archiving permit applications and plans,
- Preparing and distributing brochures and other public information on permits.
The Permits & Inspection Division is responsible to ensure compliance with all applicable Building Codes and to protect, maintain, and enhance the public health, safety, and general welfare by establishing minimum requirements and procedures to control adverse impacts associated with land disturbance, increased stormwater runoff, and encroachment by development onto floodplains.
The Document 2015 Garrett County Building Code (838.84 KB) adopts the 2015 International Building Code, 2015 International Residential Code and 2015 Energy Conservation Code with certain modifications and amendments. Additionally, all codes adopted by the Maryland Codes Administration through the Maryland Building Performance Standards are in force in Garrett County.
The Permits & Inspection Division strives to provide the highest standards consistent with the adopted Building Code, Erosion and Sediment Control Ordinance, and Stormwater Management Ordinance. This is accomplished through building inspections, code enforcement, the issuance of use and occupancy permits, and the use of soil erosion and sediment control and stormwater management practices designed in accordance with the Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR) 26.17.01, the 2011 Maryland Standards and Specifications, the Stormwater Management Act of 2007, environmental site design, and appropriate structural best management practices only when necessary.
