You can save money on your electricity bills while purchasing clean solar energy with no change in your electricity service. Community Solar is helpful for folks who cannot put solar panels on/at their home or for those who live in apartments.
What is Community Solar?
- A company installs a solar project within the Potomac Edison/First Energy territory. They are connected to the grid there.
- Local residents within the Potomac Edison/First Energy territory can sign up to purchase their power from one of those solar projects. Sign-up is free.
- Residents start saving by receiving credits for their share of the energy generated from the panels
- Up to 10% discount normally
- Up to 20-25% discount for low- and moderate- income residents, defined as 80% or below the county's median income or at or below 200% of the federal poverty level). You automatically qualify if you or someone in your household participates in certain federal, state, or local assistance programs that use an income limit at or below 200% of the federal poverty level. Eligible programs often include:
- Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP / Food Stamps)
- Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEP) / Maryland Office of Home Energy Programs (OHEP)
- Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC)
- Medicaid
